Which Concrete Foundation in Vancouver WA is Right for You?

Summer is here and for many people that means it’s time to work on that concrete project you’ve been waiting to get done. If you’re concrete project includes a foundation then there are some important things to consider before you get started. Of course, you first need to talk with some concrete contractors to get all the information you’ll need about your project and to choose the right one for the job.

After you’ve found the right contractor in Vancouver WA then you need to choose the right kind of foundation. That’s right, not all foundations are the same. There are three types of concrete foundations:

T-Shaped – this is a common foundation in any area where the ground freezes. The foundation starts with a footing below the freezing line, which is wider than the actual foundation wall. The foundation wall is then built on the footing creating a t-shape.

Frost Protected – this type of foundation is only compatible with a heated structure. It requires two sheets of polystyrene insulation. One of these sheets lays flat on a gravel bed at the wall’s base while the other lays on the outside of the foundation wall. Together they prevent the foundation from freezing. The insulation holds the heat near the edge of the slab, which keeps the ground temperature from dipping below freezing.

Slab-on-ground – this is a single layer of concrete that is laid several inches thick on the ground, with an even thicker layer at the edges. Typically the slab is laid on crushed or recycled gravel or rock. Wire mesh is also used to help prevent cracking.
